Big Boi’s “Mama Told Me” & The Case Of The Disappearing Little Dragon (Listen)Posted by Danielle Harling on 10/02/12 | Filed under Big Boi, Kelly Rowland |
So I think that I've just come to the remarkable realization that Kelly Rowland has become sort of a 2 Chainz of R&B hooks. Meaning, if you want a mainstream hit then she's your go to gal for that poppy, R&B hook that might just get you a little play on the airwaves. Despite Rowland's hook power, I'm not terribly behind Big Boi's decision to yank Swedish group Little Dragon from his newest release "Mama Told Me."
Have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about? Well, here's the version of the record which features Little Dragon...
Like 99.5 percent of Big Boi's cuts, "Mama Told Me" is pretty dope thanks in part to The Flush's heavily throwback production and Big Boi's ever-so-fresh lyricism, but I think that keeping Yukimi Nagano's vocals on the record would have added a uniqueness that would have really set the record over the top.
There's still no word yet on which version will be featured on Big Boi's "Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors," but we'll just have to see once the album is released this winter.
Nathan Update: Little Dragon goes on record:
"It is true that Little Dragon made the “Mama Told Me” track with Big Boi and even performed it live in Austin for The Fader. The whole collaboration was an amazing creative experience. Unfortunately, business terms out of our control got in the way, and an agreement couldn’t be reached in time for our version of the track to be released. At least new friendships were made, and we want to wish Big Boi good luck with the album. We look forward to collaborating with him in the future."
