Lil Wayne, Big Sean & Drake Drop Mediocre “All of the Lights (Remix)” (Listen & Download)

All of the Lights Remix
The recently leaked remix of Kanye West's "All of the Lights" is still unfinished, one more more emcee (reportedly Jay-Z) will be coming in on that instrumental section at the end, but Lil Wayne, Big Sean and Drake give us more than enough material to pass judgment on now. My judgment? Shrug.

Pre-emptive stike against those who say I'm being overly critical. "All of the Lights" is one of the best songs on one of the best albums of the last ten years by one of the best artists, and the remix features three of the purported best/biggest rappers alive. I think high expectations are completely justified, and I was hoping to play this and make the same "oh shit!" face I made when I first heard the original. Instead, I made my "this is pretty good" face.

I don't think there's any question Weezy's slow flow, auto-tuned verse is forgettable, Big Sean is entertaining, although hasn't he used that "everyone named Big got bodied, everyone named Sean/Shawn got money" line before? As for Drake, I'd rather not hear him go hard - way to rhyme "motherfucker" with "motherfucker" ten times - but at least he has the energy I was hoping for from the others.

I know RefinedHype Nation will let me know if I'm wrong, but I just don't see anyone getting that excited about this. Hell, I think "Looking for Trouble" is actually much better. Oh well, whatever. We'll have to do this again when the last verse comes in, but in the meantime....

Wayne put me to sleep. What a weak effort.

Big Sean pulled out the Nicky Minage gimmick rap flow. Didn't care for it.

Drake was the best, but he did rhyme mofo too much, and he ended his verse like it was a half-hearted mixtape track.

Pretty weak overall.

Drake shouted out J.Cole 1 day after The Game did. "I get respected by the best MCs *in this world*" Maybe not quite but you get the point. J. Cole is a monster and everyone wants to be in with him once he drops his freshman classic. It's inevitable.

Not that bad, just with the names you would expect a super good song.. Kanye needs a new verse on this. Its hard to choose a best verse but I will hold my opinion until Jay-Z (or whoever) drops the last verse.

I can already see the negative to this track though:
Too many "up and comers" will use that spot to add their own watered down Drake/Weezy impersonation to try and get YouTube buzz. Making it less likely to find an actual talented verse because of the super high concentration of verses.

I love this song's horns and other production so I'm like "Here we go!" Nope. What the hell was that Sean? Personally, I think that was just terrible. And I was like ohh Drake here we go. JUST KIDDING. Also terrible (Mufucka!). Hate to admit but Wayne's mediocre verse won here.

God that was terrible. We're looking at what was easily one of the "largest" sounding songs in a long while, and each of these superstar rappers and their huge fail to deliver the energy required for the track. It sounds more like a last second freestyle- they aren't working with the tempo or the energy of the song at all.

The beginning with Lil Wayne sounds like it could've worked, if he dropped the autotune and sped things up once the drums came in. Big Sean was probably the best lyrically, but he was overpowered by the production. Drake was way too on and off. Sounds like he didn't care at some parts.

They all tried to come across with some sort of on a vengeful tip, but they weren't giving that with their flows.

They all need to take notes from 'Ye when it comes to actually making this a -song-. He handled the song perfectly, and all of these rappers just blew it.

Maybe I'm being overly critical, but this has got to be the most underwhelming remix I've heard in a long ass while. If I was Kanye, I'd honestly try some different artists. Maybe focus on a couple of different singers and throw on J. Cole (he'd definitely have the punch) or someone along those lines. He should also have his own verse on it.

I don't think this was great, but I don't think it was as bad as folks here are making it out to be. Compare it to All Of The Lights and sure it's not that great, but it's not terrible either. It's just a very puzzling remix to me. Btw, I won't be definitive until we get the last verse.

Speaking of verses, I'm torn between Drake and Big Sean. Sean was pretty hilarious, but you could tell Drake was pretty hype to be on this beat. I'd say Sean by a slim margin only because I chuckled at his verse.

Overall, this was middling, at least until we get that last verse.

I should quickly clarify, by "terrible" I meant as a remix. Say, if this was a solo track it would've been fine. As a mixtape track, it would've been great, actually. But as remix to an incredibly over-the-top and high-budget single, it's lazy and not up to scratch. "Terrible" was probably the wrong word.

And for the bit about following Kanye, I was referring to his flow, which actually went along with the beat. Each of the rappers do try to impersonate it to some extent for a couple of bars, but it comes off awkward.

Looks like the consensus if pretty much unanimous. Not terrible, but by the high standards set and the weight of the name's attached, pretty lame.

And yes, I'm looking forward to 4,000 freestyles over that instrumental section in the next two days. Awesome.
