The Burners, Kev Choice & Bambu Know There’s “No Justice” for Oscar Grant (Listen & Download)

And now for something more serious. With a small set of exceptions, I was ashamed of hip-hop's response to the atrocity that was Hurricane Katrina, which is to say I was ashamed of the lack of response. For a music that was born during an urban black struggle for survival to stay so silent after the largest tragedy to befall black urban America this century was shameful.

Unfortunately it looks like more of the same for Oscar Grant, the Oakland teen who was shot and killed by police after Officer Johannes Mehserl shot him in the back while he was laying prostrate on the ground. Officer Mehserl claimed that he was attempting to taser Grant and mistakenly drew his gun instead of his taser, a claim a jury believed and only convicted him of involuntary manslaughter, setting off protests and small scale rioting in Oakland later this week.

Thankfully someone' s speaking up. The Burners (The Are and Zumbi of the Bay Area crew Zion I, along with Kev Choice and L.A. based Bambu (who still has one of my favorite videos of all-time) have just released the appropriately titled "No Justice", a banger that will hopefully be only the first in a long line of no justice, no peace tracks. It's enough to make a man want to listen to "Let's Get Free" all day.
