I'm a product of the '80s, which means that I some of my first memories growing up are of watching Mike Tyson make grown men cry. The younger generation may only know Mike as the soundbite machine who make's cameos in "The Hangover", but those who were around for his prime remember just how deadly Iron Mike was during his prime.

He wasn't the greatest boxer of all-time, but he was the most feared boxer of all time. 250 pound men who fought other 250 pound men for a living ran from Mike. He didn't just want to win, he wanted to destroy. Watching him in the ring was like watching a lion hunt down an injured gazelle on the Nature channel - there was no hesitation, no mercy, just the strong eating the weak. Let's review....

In one of his first major victories, a 1986 TKO of Marvis Frazier, Tyson unleashed an uppercut that turned Marvis' spine into jello:



Just a few months after crippling Frazier, Tyson turned his fury on the much larger Trevor Berbick, delivering a two-round beatdown that elevated Tyson from "who's this new kid?" to "holy shit, this guy might be unbeatable" territory. No one could stand up to that right hook.



By 1988 Iron Mike was the united heavyweight champion of the world, but boxing experts expected Tyson to finally meet his match in an Atlantic City fight with Michael Spinx. Nope - instead Spinx went down faster than a drunk girl on prom night.



By 2000 a prison sentence and age had conspired to slow Mike down, but he was still capable of incredible ferocity. In a 2000 bout with Lou Savarese Tyson grew infuriated when Savarese refused to completely lose consciousness, nearly knocking out a referee in the process. At this point the consensus opinion on Tyson was something like "holy shit, he might actually kill someone in the ring."



From there it was essentially downhill for Mike. In just a few years he would become boxing's sideshow circus freak, but for more than a decade Michael Gerard Tyson was the most vicious boxer to ever step into a ring, and the next time someone even dares to tell you different, feel free to show them this post.
