Production Breakdown: Every Beat From Kanye’s “Dark Twisted Fantasy” Album (Updated!)

Posted by Richard on 01/21/11 | Filed under Top Stories, Features, Kanye West, Production Breakdown, Best Of

"Runaway"

Ah, “Runaway,” the single that spawned one of the most insanely over-the-top music videos in the history of over-the-top music videos. It’s also the longest (at 9:07), and contains quite a few samples. Of course, some of ‘em are a little incidental, like the vocal snippets used in Kanye’s VMA performance which, though omitted from the early leak of the single, made it into the album version of “Runaway”(complete with spinny stereo effects!) Those, by the way, were borrowed from a live version of “Mary Jane,” the ‘78 single by Rick James.

This isn’t the actual version sampled on “Runaway” (the version credited is “Live at Long Beach, CA’ 1981,” and James seems to be in Germany in this clip), but you can hear a similar “Look at’cha!” at 3:07. The audience pictured apparently were not “shining like beautiful stars” that night (to quote a Rick James ad-lib sampled on the VMA performance but not on the album version of “Runaway”) Better luck next time, Germany.

The next one is really incidental, but too amusing not to mention. As Nathan remarked upon in his guest production breakdown a few weeks back, that “Funky President” “Hey!” sample was featured heavily in this SNL performance of the record.

Well, one of those ‘Hey’s did make an appearance on the album – the clean version, anyway. While Kanye recorded his own “hey” to cover up the reference to his dick (you know, the dick he sent pictures of to girls on MySpace), the “Funky President” “hey” is retained in the next line: “I don’t know what it is with females, but I’m not too good with that (hey!)”

On a totally unrelated note, since when is “jerk-offs” considered clean language? By my estimation, that’s at least as risque as “asshole,” and would probably be even more awkward for a parent to have to explain to a curious youngster. But I could write a whole damn column on the vagaries of musical censorship, so let’s get back on topic.

The main sample behind Kanye, Emile, Jeff Bhasker and Mike Dean‘s beat – the break – has been the source of some confusion, thanks to the fact that it’s a second-order sampling from another hip-hop cut. Specifically “Tha Basement,” a track off Pete Rock & CL Smooth‘s classic ‘92 debut, Mecca and the Soul Brother.

The sample listed on the liner notes, however, is “Expo 83,” an instrumental single by funk-soul group The Backyard Heavies; the intro to Pete Rock’s beat seems to have been drawn from this record’s ending fade-out.

I think we can be fairly certain that crediting the Heavies joint was an ass-covering measure, and that the actual sample was grabbed from the intro of Pete Rock’s joint. For one thing, attentive listeners will be able to hear those bouncy, echoey keyboard(?) chords from the rendition heard on “The Basement” at some points in “Runaway.” Sure, Kanye could have experimented till he figured out the precise mix of effects, or just asked Rock if he remembered how it was done, but… what would the point have been?

I’m not sure what I can say about ‘Runaway’s vocoder-assisted outro that I haven’t already said. So, at the risk of sounding like a broken record here goes: his is yet another twist on the recurring theme of vocal distortion. I should add, though: how many other rappers could end a single with three solid minutes of vocoder noodling over melodramatic strings, and have it actually work? Only Kanye.

Well, that wraps it up for 2010; I hope y’all have the best holiday vacation OF ALL TIME uh, ever. Tune in next year for the thrilling conclusion to my beautiful, dark twisted breakdown of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Peace out!

As always insightful. I know music is what Kanye does, but I don't understand how he can flip some of these what I would consider otherwise average unheard of tracks into gold. Most be part of his genius.

Dark Fantasy is the kind of beat that makes you feel on top of the world and lets face the facts 1. Everyone wants to be on top of the world 2. Ye is a beast producer. Nuff said.

All of the lights has to be one of the best produced tracks of the last few years. I loved the breakdown in "Devil in a New Dress" also, it was amazing. Normal words cant describe his album well enough. Get a home theatre and pop the CD in...Jizzed in the Christmas tree. xD

regarding the ross sample on monster bit, i think at that 4.57 point you can sorta decipher "kanye west samples, bitch".

with the "bitch" taken from ross first word of his spit.

or maybe i'm just crazy!

Quick check: how many times can you hear Charlie Wilson vocals on new Kanye tracks?

He's on both "That's My Bitch" and at the end of "Monster" with Bon Iver. In "Monster," he backs all of the vocals. Bon Iver only has one real singer, Justin Vernon, so the other voice is Wilson.

In "That's My Bitch" he occupies 1:45 to 2:02 and 2:55 to 3:13.

Or at least, I'm 99.9% sure it's him on those tracks, lol.

@dirtyharry: I stand corrected. You may be right, I do hear the "B*tch I'ma..." in there.

@tdotraza: I checked the official credits for "Monster" and didn't see Charlie ilson. My guess is it's just Justin Vernor layering his voice, but who knows. You're right about WIlson being all over the album, though.

the more I think about it, the less I like the album version of devil in a new dress... that rick ross verse does nothing for me, and that interlude in the middle is just useless...just an exercise of the same melody with different instrumentation, as if he was trying to lengthen the album...

^ Glad to see people are appreciating how insanely deep Richard is breaking down this album. No one's doing anything like this, no one.

As a producer, I'm really glad there are others out there that pay this much attention to their music as I do cos I've spent hours and hours listening to this album tryna figure out all the little intricacies that Kanye has put into these beats..great job Richard, definitely an eye opener and something to get people talking!

I decided I would comment at the end of the review.
So here's my thoughts:

1.Thank you for doing something that no one else would even think of doing.
2. Next time you do something of this quality, make sure everyone knows when it's updated because I hated how I had to keep checking over & over.
3.You should be getting paid a large sum of money for doing this
4.Next album = Lasers? (asssuming it release in the next millenium.)
5.I like the newer DIAND rather than the orignal for anyone who cares.

Thanks again, everyone.

@Originality:
1. No problem!
2. Not sure whether you're referring to the Holiday breaks or my unscheduled delays, but I always try to shoot for Friday mornings. I'll def. try to be more clear, though my ever-changing workload sometimes means pushing the column back to do the best job possible.
3. I can forward you my PayPal account, if you're offering... haha.
4. I hadn't thought of doing another full-album breakdown, but if there's interest and the album seems like good breakdown material, I wouldn't rule it out.

Also, props for your avatar - even though it always tempts me to flip on New Vegas when I should be working.
