It was only two weeks ago that I was looking at the album sales charts and starting to think that maybe hip-hop was finally pulling out of its prolonged sales slump. Nope. This week’s top-ten albums list is almost completely devoid of urban music, unless T-Pain’s got a guest feature on Barbara Streisand’s new album that I don’t know about. Thank god for Jay-Z.
We might as well get this over with. Here ya go:

The Refined Take:
1) For the record, here’s the list of artists that are currently outselling pretty much every urban artist alive: Miley Cyrus, Barbara Streisand, the motherf**king Backstreet Boys and whoever the hell Michael Buble is. Ah!!!!!! Excuse me while I go suck on an exhaust pipe for a little while. I’m so desperate I’m considering just calling them the “Backstreet Boyz” and counting them as an urban artist.
2) Thank god for Jay-Z. At this point the man’s pretty much keeping hip-hop alive by himself. If the past, and this interview, is any indication Weezy won’t be coming out with a new album for another five years, but goddamn the industry could use him right now.
3) “Memoirs” has done ok, but by Mariah’s standards sales have been pretty slow. I’m mean we’re talking about the woman with the most number one hits in history and even she can’t crack the top 3. I love The-Dream, but she should have stuck with J.D.
4) Drake’s run in the top ten had finally come to an end. I have to give it to the man, it was good while it lasted.
5) You know who you’re definitely not seeing here, Fat Joe and Saigon. Fat Joe’s “J.O.S.E. 2” has only sold 8,000 copies so far (someone’s career is officially over) and Saigon’s “Warning Shots 2” has only moved…wait for it….3,100. Ouch.

Um, Michael Buble is a dope artist. Don't be hating on him just because he's not hip hop or urban music. A lot of artists that our out right now who dropped albums (like Fat Joe) don't deserve to be on the top 10. We've had our weeks this year and we will have them again. Jay-Z is holding it down...but as far as anyone else as of late in Urban Music that should be charting right now, there is no one. I feel you on hip hop and stuff getting shine, but let's not start becoming haters of other genres just because urban music is in a slump. |

Also, part of the reason in the drop in sales is because in my opinion, hip hop and urban music is like the ONLY genre who suffers GREATLY from bootlegging and what not. We don't appreciate the artists enough. I don't see many other genres with fully leaked albums and what not. |

LOL @YoungP! :p I get your point Mike, but it's even simpler(and worse) than that, and you mentioned it: the problem is not appreciating the artists enough. Because, believe me, all the other genres get leaked too. I... uhm... just downloaded Mr "whoever the hell Michael Buble is" album, for example! Shame on you Nathan for referring to him like that! :p You're my reviewer idol and all, but that better be a joke. Buble is great. (ps: I thought you were more diverse with music: do you only like urban? It's ok, just asking) The difference is in the fans: the other genres have more loyal ones. If it was for love only, Slaughterhouse would go platinum, but not even close... we are all part of the problem. |
