Sports Wrap: Davies F**ks BYU, NBA Playoffs Loom & More!

(Was she worth it Davies? Was she? Oh, she was? In that case, congrats.)

After a hiatus - I said hiatus, not lock out - I'm happy to say that the RefinedHype Sports Wrap is back. The homey JR the Writer will be taking over our balls-related writing (pause) from now on, and for his first week he breaks down Davies' suspension from BYU for illegal intercourse, the looming NBA playoffs, Sterling's latest f**k up and much more.

College Hoops

With March Madness coming up, it’s time for people to act like they’re hardcore college basketball experts and start making their picks. We’ll speak all about the madness next week, but just know that it’s the Big East’s year and if I am right there will be 11 teams making it into the big dance.

Thanks to their Forward Brandon Davies, BYU has become disgruntled and unorganized, which resulted in them being DESTROYED by a New Mexico team that is only 7-8 in the Mountain West conference. Oh yea, and if you want to know why Brandon is the most hated person on campus, he was recently suspended after confessing to having sex with his girlfriend. BYU is a very strict religious school that also has honor codes that state no cursing and no consumption of alcohol. Hey, Jimmer may be the best scorer in the country, but I guess he’s not scoring in the sheets! Kiss that number 1 seed goodbye Cougars!

Speaking of #1 seeds, it feels that there is no definitive #1 pick this year. Duke has once again proven itself to be overrated, and its losses to non-ranked ACC teams are giving people a reason to believe that a bad draw with a 3rd -5th Big East seed can leave an unprepared Duke team leaving early. (Remember it happened just 2 years ago with Villanova!)

Texas and Kansas both have shown their flaws but maybe Texas being the worst of the two. After another loss to Kansas St. Monday night, Texas is reassuring what they do every year, by losing when it counts the most. For the past 2 years, in the month of March Texas has gone 6-12 showing that as teams progressively get better during the season, the Longhorns get worst.

NBA

Never thought I’d say that I rather have the ball in Channing Frye’s hands before Lebron’s with 5 seconds left, but after back to back game winners, Frye is hot and Bron Bron is not Wade, House, and Chalmers are ALL better three point shooters. So let’s switch it up a bit and let Wade take some winners, huh Spoelstra?

While everyone is focusing on the Knicks, Heat, and Celtics, a lot are forgetting about the Bulls and Magic. With Noah back, the Bulls look like a complete team again, and if Deng can continue making his outside shots, the Bulls have a legitimate chance of making an Eastern Finals.

The Magic are also a team to not overlook. As long as Dwight Howard is playing with the anger he’s been playing with lately, NO ONE in the league can stop him. Watch it though Dwight, picking up that 15th technical foul a couple of days ago leaves you with 1 left before suspensions, and I’m sure the Hawks are loving that! (Don’t y’all want a 4th seed home court?)

Into the West, with the recent injury to Tony Parker, the West is up for grabs. Although being out 2-4 weeks may not seem like a big loss, facing the Lakers, Mavs and Heat twice in the next 2 weeks can easily turn a 5 game lead over to the Mavs who are 17 of their last 18.

I would also like to add, the Celtics did not trade Perkins for the sake of trading him. Perkins was offered a contract extension in the beginning of the season, which he declined. So what does that mean? That means the Celtics knew they couldn’t afford him and he would walk away this summer. So why not trade and get something for him now?

Quick notes about the NBA:

• Kevin Love may be the most underrated/appreciated player of the year.
• Derrick Rose hurt his MVP candidacy by allowing a 17 point comeback by the Hawks last night, but is still the leading choice in my opinion.
• The boycott from the Detroit players (led by Rip Hamilton) was in poor taste, but you can’t blame Rip. Watching fellow veteran players go wherever they want while you are stuck in Detroit is rough.
• The Celtics getting Troy Murphy is a win mainly because it keeps Troy Murphy away from the Heat.

Other Sports

• The NFL owners are trying to keep the media money they’ve received, which is usually the player’s insurance money. Rumor has it that the owners were only staying open minded about a lockout agreement because of the media money. However, these players depend on their bodies to make a living and no insurance means no rehab, no drugs, and not even a trip to the doctor for their sick child. (Not looking good!)
• The Mets can’t afford their payroll, but because of the Bernie Madoff scandal they may get a pass from the league.
• Carson Palmer says he will never set foot again in the Bengals stadium and if he is not traded or cut he will retire. He said he has 80 million in the bank, and is only playing for the love of the game. You think he’s serious? (Hell yea!)
• Vernon Gholston of the New York Jets, had a clause in his contract that would earn him $9 million for one sack OR one fumble recovery. Think he got it? (No!)

Dumbass of the week!

The Clippers owner took out an ad to celebrate Black History Month during last night’s game (March 2nd) and in honor of the holiday, gave tickets to 1,000 “under privileged kids.” So apparently Donald Sterling thinks Black History is whatever month he wants it to be, and thinks all “under privileged” kids are black.
