Nicki Minaj & Eminem’s “Roman’s Revenge” - Genuis or Atrocious?

There are really only two options here. Either Nicki Minaj's new record "Roman's Revenge" officially places her amongst hip-hop heavyweights, a rapper who at the very least is worthy of standing in the same room as guest artist Eminem, or it's a bigger atrocity than Ron Browz "Gimme $20". There is no middle option.

Personally, as much as part of me is dying inside to write this, I have to give it to the woman. There are only a small group of rappers who can make the interweb explode with just one track, and Nicki's obviously one of them, plus she's undoubtedly, for better or worse, put female emcees back on the map and doesn't back down an inch, even when placed next to the biggest names in the game (see also, "Monster".). Lord knows she's aggravating, but overall, especially on this record? I almost can't believe I'm gonna do this, but my finger's hovering over the "Genius" vote.

And I'm sure the deeply knowledgeable citizens of RefinedHype Nation picked this up immediately, but just in case there are any new visitors with us today, Nicki's "dungeon dragon" is a reference to Busta Rhymes' work on "Scenario", a.k.a. the greatest guest verse in hip-hop history (yes, I will argue that point). It's a fitting reference considering her flow's primarily modeled after a young Busta Rhymes.

Amm092434	This song was different and definitely not atrocious but not Genius either so i guess i am in the middle. (I voted genius thought) P.S. this brings back memories of when busta rhymes didnt suck. (Or was at least consistent)

d-mac	Ask yourself, will you want to listen to this 10 years from now? If your kid asked you what hip hop was like in your day, would you play them this song? The answer for me is no. Does it have great punchlines? Yes? Is it musically pleasing? Hell no. This is terrible. Time for rappers to start making music again.

ITSxWILL	the only thing that turns me off about this is the accents she does id rather have rapping in her voice. also she needs to stay away from the lil wayne rhyme scheme... "I leave it the bank let it collect intrust, oops i mean intrest" lil wayne "Got paper like a fax machine Asinene oops I mean asinine" needs to stop

i hate it, i feel like im listening to a stand-up comedian with terrible segways.
thats the way out for them i get sooo annoyed

honestly if wayne did it only id be alright thats his gimmick but now nicki is doing it, God help us if drake starts doing it.

my problem is everyone is saying shes the greatest femal rapper ever and if we learned anything from the drake push, yea your a hot person to be featured on a track but can you hold your own. Remember the criticism drake recieved on his album? Granted he still sold but still... yikes!

I'm with d-mac here. One of the biggest things holding this back is the production, which makes the song both boring and irritating to complete.

And that pause flow was overdone to the point that I want to tear the song into shreds. When you use it that much it's as if you're TRYING to make the song look like a joke.

Maybe I'm hating.

Being unique doesn't make you a genius. A genius awes and inspires. Getting the genius vote only because people feel stupefied listening to whatever you concocted isn't something worth feeling prideful over. My (more than) two cents; I can't find the brilliant factor.

First time I heard the "mispronounce then correct yourself" was Fabolous on "Diamonds on My Damn Chain" in April of '07. It was undeniably clever then, but it's gotten old now. Was Fab the originator?

On another note, I think the "It's going down...basement" metaphor style is lazy and weak. Nicki demonstrated here just how old it can get.

Eminem's flow was ok, but his lyrics were on point. He was the only good part of this song.

I will give props to her "TEAM" not her, regardless her delivery was boring typical and expected honestly im tired of hearing her, shes just another example of great management, they drove the product well and kept it in the headlines, shes just along for the ride, as long as she keeps up with the typical delivery and poses for weird phot shots and takes part of gossip worthy actions she gets her check

ITSxWILL	the whole "Its going down... basement" was used by drizzy this year but he actually gave credit to who originated it. His name slips my mind at this time and Nathan's right, but i agree with the latter her handlers desereve the credit. sidenote* saw her at summer jam and wasnt impressed but then again drake wasnt impressive either

SunBear	Everything was bad about this. SB is just not that talented, Em sounds played now that he's sober and Nicki is shit. Perhaps they all could join a superteam with 50, Soulja Boy and MC Hammer on the comeback.
