Kid Cudi Man on the Moon

(Editor's note: RefinedHype is proud to present the second scene in our very own Jacques Morel's script for "Man on the Moon: End of Day", a screenplay accompaniment to Kid Cudi's groundbreaking album. Each scene is written to parallel a corresponding track on the album. Those interested can listen to the song below while reading. Click here for previous week's scenes. Enjoy.)

Scene 2: Soundtrack to My Life

INT. BEDROOM. DAY.

A twin bed sits at the left side of the room. The bed is unkempt and has clothes all over it. Under the bed, shoes, papers, and a book bag stick out from the bottom. Across from the bed is a dresser with a large mirror. The walls are covered with clippings from various magazines. SCOTT is seen lying in the bed under the comforters.

CLOSE SHOT OF SCOTT’S FACE

His eyes open. With his left hand he rubs his left eye. He brings his arm down. His eyes are bloodshot.

BACK TO SCENE

SCOTT leans forward. The comforters fall to his midsection as he sits Indian style on the bed. He is shirtless, in boxers, and is physically fit. With his right hand he scratches his head and yawns. He brings his hand downwards into his boxers. He removes his hand and then SIGHS heavily.

SCOTT
(whisper)
Where is that damn clip?

He jumps off the bed. He stands erect in the middle of his room. His head scans the room. He YAWNS again. He turns around and looks at himself in the dresser mirror. He smiles.

SCOTT
(whisper)
Looking good.

He looks downwards and his eyes open. With his left hand he picks up a small joint. He turns around and climbs back into bed holding the joint. He brings the joint to his mouth.

SCOTT
Lighter! Need. A. Lighter.

SCOTT climbs back out of bed. He places the joint down on the dresser and starts rapidly looking through the items on the dresser. He turns around and picks up a book bag. He flips it over and empties it on the floor. Two notebooks, random papers, a CD, and a lighter fall on to the floor. SCOTT throws the bag on the bed.

INSERT ITEMS ON THE FLOOR.

The lighter lies across the top half of the CD. SCOTT picks up the lighter. The words “DEMO” are seen on top of the CD.

BACK TO SCENE

SCOTT stands erect with the lighter. He smiles. His head turns towards the joint on the dresser. He picks up the joint and holds it to the lighter. He flicks the lighter open and fire engulfs the end of the joint. He then brings it to his mouth and puffs. Smoke billows out of his mouth. He SIGHS again.

LISA (O.S)
Your smoking again,aren’t you?

SCOTT turns around sharply. The joint hangs out of the side of his mouth. Smoke continues to pour from his mouth.

SCOTT
(surprised)
Shit, Mom!

LISA walks into the room. She is wearing a green bandanna in her hair. A yellow apron drapes over her blue sweatshirt. She wears blue sweatpants and blue slippers. She is holding a large spoon in her hand.

LISA
(nonchalantly)
You’re a fucking stoner you know
that? 24 years old and still
living in your mother’s house.
With the same stupid “pipe dream”
to become a rapper. Hilarious.

SCOTT
I’m going to get signed. I hope
you know that. Really. Kanye
well he is starting this new
label. It is called G.O.O.D
music.

LISA
Ever since you were a kid, you
could not just follow the damn
program. All you would do is
sit in your room all day and play
with your toys. Every Christmas
I bought you those damn toys.
And you would sit there, by
yourself, in your room and play
with them. Everyone would always
ask, “Why is Scott alone?”
We never knew why. Now I find out
your smoking on your own. By
yourself. Again. As usual.

LISA turns and steps out of the room. SCOTT takes the joint out of his mouth.

SCOTT
(angrily)
I hate you.

DISSOLVE TO:
INT. BEDROOM. DAY.

LISA is seen bending over fixing the bed. She is wearing a bright red short sleeved shirt and blue jeans shorts. She is in slippers.

LISA
(whispering to herself)
I swear. Scott was always a slob.

She turns around towards the dresser. She collects all the loose papers and files them neatly at the corner. She then turns around and picks up a shoe. She looks to the bed and places the shoe next to another of the same type. With her left hand she picks up the bottom of the bookbag. The contents of the bag fall to the floor. She bends over to pick them up but stops suddenly.

INSERT CONTENTS OF BOOKBAG.

A paper with the title “Soundtrack to My Life” is seen on top of a notebook.

BACK TO SCENE

LISA takes the paper and stands up and begins to read it.

LISA
(reading)
I've got some issues that
nobody can see And all of
these emotions are pourin'
outta me I bring them to
the light for you It's only
right. This is the soundtrack
to my life The soundtrack
to my life ohhhh.

Her eyes scan the rest of the paper.

SCOTT
(inquisitively)
What you doin Lisa?

LISA looks up sharply. SCOTT is seen in the doorway. He is wearing a red shirt, jeans, and bright red shiny sneakers. She holds the paper in her right hand and points at SCOTT with her left index finger.

LISA
(definitively)
What the hell is this?

SCOTT
A song I wrote.

LISA
(sheepishly)
A song you wrote?
(laughingly)
Scotty what is this?

SCOTT
The Soundtrack to My Life.

LISA
What issues do you have that
I, or the entire world cannot
see?

SCOTT
I really don’t know where to
begin, to be honest. Its some-
thing I have gotten used to.
My music is the fabric to the
clothes I use to hide the naked-
ness of my life.

LISA
This! This is what you want
to do? What if they are not
into you? What if you FAIL? Is
it something you really want
to deal with?

SCOTT
It is.

LISA
Do you want my support? I mean…
I’m your mother. Shouldn’t
that be something I’d do? Supply
the water for my son’s ship
to sink in.

SCOTT
To be frank, I could care-
less if I had it or not. Born
alone die alone.

LISA
Well you are forgetting that
I “borned” you alone into this
world. If you want to be alone,
then you might as well leave my
got-damned house Scott.

LISA turns around and begins to walk out of the room. Her shoulder brushes against SCOTT’s right shoulder as she walks out. SCOTT grabs his shoulder with his left hand and reaches out with his right hand to touch her back. He trips forward slightly after she loses his grasp.

SCOTT
Kanye actually called Mom. I’m
moving to Chicago.
