Kat Stacks Slapped, Lil B Punched & Our Idiotic Obsession With Violence

Just in case you've been under a rock or poor and without internet for the past couple weeks, let me fill you in. Two of the most popular (if not THE most popular) videos online, currently, are the video of Kat Stacks getting slapped around and the video of Lil B getting 'knocked the fuck out'.

I'm going to attempt, for a second, to dismiss the hilarity and possible validity and maybe even necessity of each, and jump straight to this: Why do we allow this crap to continue?

As has been discussed before by myself and many commenters, hip hop is a culture, not just a genre of music, and though hip hop can be involved with many facets of entertainment, hip hop should not be viewed AS entertainment. Our culture should not be someone else's entertainment. Yet, tha'ts exactly what we make it with ridiculous videos and interviews and songs etc etc that do nothing more than make our culture look outrageous. Hip hop should be a way of life, and not simply a spectacle for those on the outside to laugh at and point fingers at.

Whenever there's a fight, people pull out cell phones to capture it instead of trying to stop it. We laugh at Kat Stacks and say she deserved to get slapped around instead of being appalled by the site of a bunch of goons harassing a defenseless woman in public.

This trend is a constant in our culture. And this trend is killing us from the inside out.

When we perpetuate this idiocracy, we allow ourselves and our culture to be the whipping boy of American culture. How can we honestly get mad at the negative portrayal of our culture when we are the ones video taping and broadcasting these ridiculous events to the world?

I'm not pointing fingers, I'm just sayin'.
