There's a certain automatic gimmick appeal to any young musician. Even if they're not even half as dope as grown man rappers, the "he's only a teenager!" angle multiplies the attention they receive - and I'm not immune to it. Would I be writing about Joey Bada$$ if he wasn't 17? I'd like to believe so, by any measure the Brooklyn native is turning out dopeness, but the idea that if he's this good at 17 he could be one of rap's elite emcees at 25 is swimming through my brain.

Now let's not get carried away and start calling Joey the future of hip-hop. A lot of things can happen between now and then - after all, the kid is only 17, and as a general rule 17-year-olds aren't exactly a reliable bunch. But in the meantime, check out his new video "Survival Tactics" and slow banger "Waves" and tell me the kid's not legit.

Either way, we'll get plenty of evidence in the form of his "1999" album, coming sometime before "Detox".
