J. Cole Promises “It Won’t Be Long” (Listen & Download)

Before we get into the specifics, let's take a quick step back. Now I'm not certain newly leaked J. Cole cut "It Won't Be Long" will be on his as-yet untitled debut album, but I think we can safely assume it will be. I know it's (obviously) almost impossible to control leaks in this day and age, but at this rate - "Higher", "Blow Up", etc. - the entire album will be out months before it's supposed to drop this fall. Which means don't be surprised if tracks that were likely intended for the album, like "Won't Be Long", don't end up on the final product as Cole goes back into the studio to record new, unheard material. Jay seems to be able to keep his shit under lock and key, you'd think he'd teach Cole how to as well.

Anyway, "It Won''t Be Long" finds the future of Roc Nation on his gospel-ish, inspirational, political tip, using the softly symphonic beat to touch on everything from his struggles to succeed in the music industry to the legacy of MLK and the failings of the American educational system. Impressively, Cole managed to deliver all this and more without every sounding preachy. This dude's the real deal.
