Hip Hop’s Biggest Business Blunders

Posted by Danielle Harling on 04/30/10 | Filed under Features

In the age of the new rapper, it would seem almost absurd for a rapper to not be taking part in some kind of business venture. Whether it be a liquor, a restaurant, or a co-authored book there’s bound to be something in the works. Sad thing is a lot of these business ventures start out really great but somehow end up falling apart after a few years, sometimes even less. RefinedHype.com takes a look at some of the biggest business blunders from Jay-Z, Diddy, and more.

Jay-Z’s 40/40 Club
Jay-Z’s 40/40 Club

Not only was Jay-Z’s 40/40 Club recently plagued by shady employee’s, patron beatings, and more but ask any resident of NYC what they think of the 40/40 Club and you’re bound to get an eye roll. From rude bartender’s to offensively overpriced drinks, 40/40 Club has made its way onto New York City’s shunned list. Hopefully 40/40’s other locations are managing a little better, but we wouldn’t bet our paychecks on it.

Diddy’s Justin’s Restaurant

Having your own restaurant can be a very viable business, but if you’re making all the wrong moves then your business is bound to go down the toilet. Somehow this managed to be the case for Hip Hop entrepreneur Diddy’s restaurant Justin’s. His New York City restaurant was closed after several years and word on the street is the Atlanta location isn’t doing too hot. On the flipside you have someone like Ludacris whose restaurant, Straits, is absolutely thriving with chains in Atlanta, Houston, San Francisco, and more. Sounds like Diddy could learn a thing or to from Luda.

Any Rapper and Energy Drinks
Crunk Juice

Why rappers were so quick to jump on the energy drink bandwagon is beyond us. I honestly think 95% of people would be extremely hesitant to bring themselves anywhere near a drink called Crunk Juice, Pimp Juice, or Hyphy. Needless to say the energy drink bandwagon has long crashed and burned.

How dare you disparage E-40's Hyphy Juice like that? How dare you!

the restaurant business is hard. Many pro-athletes throw money at an idea and hope that their name will mean fans will continue to support them in this new business venture.
Great SI article a while back about how 80% of NFL players go BROKE 5 years after they retire from the NFL. The number is higher among NBA players.
Rappers beware. It is the same for you as it is for sports stars.

Great parallel KO. Like athletes, very few musicians know how to manage their money. Giant diamond chains can be dope, but they're not exactly a wise investment.
