In the rap blog game it's post first, ask questions later, which is exactly how we end up with a mess like
Fat Joe's new "
Pride & Joy" record. When it first leaked it had Funk Flex bombs all over it, another sad fact of life in the internet age, and was widely reported to feature
Kanye West and
Miguel.
Although most outlets simply posted the track without comment, a few people (including myself) were pretty insistent that Miguel wasn't on the record. Or if he was, you sure as hell couldn't hear him. As it turned out, Miguel himself was pretty surprised to see himself listed as a feature:
Then reports started circulating that it was Kanye and Roscoe Dash sharing hook duties. For example, that's Kanye singing the "still my pride and joy" section at the :38 mark, and Roscoe Dash singing "I ain't never felt a feeling like this" at the 1:10 mark. Ok, that sounds much more accurate...and then Fat Joe started promoting the track as also Jadakiss, Mos Def, DJ Khaled, Roscoe Dash, MIguel and Busta Rhymes.
What? Is there another version of "Pride & Joy" out there with more verses? The mix on Fat Joe's vocals sound really off here, maybe the version circulating the interwebs isn't the final version. Or maybe all those dudes are singing the "Even if she all about the money I don't really care" together so you can't distinguish them, although that just seems fucking weird.
What the hell is going on here?
I feel like I'm on crazy pills. Oh well, I'm sure it will all get sorted out sooner or later via a Tumblr post of an Instragram tweet. Welcome to hip-hop in the digital era.
p.s. It's got to be weird/infuriating to be Miguel (or any artist in that situation) and read people slam you for a song you didn't even do or isn't the final version.
UPDATE: Got the clean version in there now, for what little it matters.
