As I wrote when Drake released his long-awaited lead single "Over", with all due respect to Jay, Luda, Nas, etc., there's only one man in the game capable of creating the widespread insanity over the release of a video, and his name's Drake. So with no further ado, ladies and gentlemen, I give you the visuals to "Over".
Per usual, the powers that be might take this down any minute (fucking powers that be). If they do I'll make sure to have a new version up asap.
1) Believe it or not, this is Drake's first video as a solo artist. Ten years ago it would have been impossible for an artist to get as big as Drake without having ever done a solo video, but with the importance the game now places on guest features and the power of the interwebs it's (obviously) entirely possible.
2) As long as we're on the topic, this video's also proof of how much the label's are economically struggling. Five years ago this would have been directed by Hype Williams and featured at least one diamond-covered yacht. Now, in the midst of a recession and a crippling lack of album sales for the industry, we basically get Drake, a bedroom and a projector.
3) The theme of this video (the leit motif if you will) was Drake's struggle between hist past life and his future life, between his artistic soul and his new found riches, between true love and Amber Rose-ish looking girls wearing thongs. Frankly, it was also a little bit of a struggle for me to stay interested.
4) One thing this video has done is made me want to get a projector for my crib. How ill would it be to play a movie like "Avatar" on your entire room? And yes, I'm aware that we not one of the cooler things I've ever written.
5) My final analysis? Nothing to hate on, but underwhelming. That's it. In one word, this video is underwhelming. I remain underwhelmed.
