Does “Come to Rock (Freestyle)” Prove Diggy Simmons is Legit? (Listen & Download)

Diggy Simmons
Celebrity kids almost never manage to successfully follow in their parent's footsteps for two reasons: talent and drive. Let's start with talent. A few summers ago a friend offered tickets to go see The Police and I gladly accepted (what, I'm only allowed to enjoy rap?). Opening for The Police was the lead singer's son, and while at first I was doubtful, I figured at the very least he had his father's genes and was brought up in a musical household, how bad could he be? Very, very bad actually. Just not good, at all. Talent isn't necessarily passed down through the generations like eye color.

Second, drive. Just take Michael Jordan's son Marcus Jordan. Is he as rawly talented as his father? Probably not. But the fact that the college age baller (almost definitely) won't make it to the NBA has much more to do with drive. MJ was legendarily driven, obsessed with rising from his humble beginnings by putting in more practice than anyone else. Marcus, on the other hand, grew up with everything. No matter how hard his work ethic, is he really staying in the gym to shoot those 100 extra jumpers after everyone has gone home when he knows in the back of his mind that if he doesn't make the league he'll still be set for life?

However, although it's far, far too early to tell, 15-year-old Diggy Simmons, a.k.a. the son of Run D.M.C.'s legendary founder, may just be the exception to the rule, as we find out on his new cut "Come to Rock (Freestyle)"- which for all of you non-classic rock fans is over Led Zeppelin's classic hard rock cut "Immigrant Song". I was frankly unconvinced by his previous material, including his debut mixtape, but after listening to this I totally see why Atlantic signed the kid - he can flat out rap. True, there's a 1.7 percent chance that he writes his own rhymes, but the truth is most rappers don't write their own rhymes. The kid's flow is precise and crisp, and you just can't teach that? So will he make it? If anything derails him it will be the drive factor, but at the very least he's got a respectable chance.

*Sigh*

If a song has a hook...NOT a freestyle.

Nonetheless, I think Diggy has legit skills but for some reason his voice kind of catches me the wrong way.. kinda like Bow Wow in his early days

@Almost Forgotten Ah, the inevitable Bow Wow comparison, and I can't agree. Bow Wow was ill for such a young kid, but he never because a grown man rapper. We'll see if the same fate befalls young Diggy.

I’m not on board yet, the flow was alright but I think it could be better. I’ll wait and see what else he brings to the table.
