Bun B, Drake & the Real Story Behind “Miss Me (OG Mix)” (Listen & Download)

The internets have been buzzing today with Bun B's release of "Miss Me (OG Mix)", which outlets are reporting is the original version of "Miss Me" originally intended for Bun's questionable 5 Mic album "Trill O.G." before he gave it to Drake to use on "Thank Me Later", which is completely true. Kind of. Sort of. Step by step, here's how we actually got to this point. Listen and download...

* Producer Boi-Ida throws together quick beat using a sample of Hank Crawford's "Wildflower", then sends it off to Drake.

* Drake likes it and wants to work on it. Drake, his production partner Noah "40" Shebib and Bun all happen to be in the studio together at the time, so they record a version featuring Bun in the opening verse and the "All Night Long" hook.

* The track's still not right, so Drake replaces the hook with the "Miss Me" version and "40" starts messing with the beat, muting some of the synths, cutting the fast-paced high hat and giving it a more "underwater" feel. At this point they're planning to include the record on "Trill O.G."

* Lil Wayne hears the record and wants to get in on it, then is promptly convicted. Drake, thinking that this could now be a dope record for "Thank Me Later" featuring his soon-to-be incarcerated mentor, asks Bun if he can have the record and Bun, being the nice dude he is, says sure.

* They record Wayne's verse, then replace Bun's verse with Weezy's. As a nod to the original record Drake includes the "Drake you got em' right?" snippet from Bun, the outro gets reworked to include a shout-out to Jonathan “JJ” Johnson, one of their friends in Houston who was shot and killed, and the rest, as they say, is history.
