Kendrick Lamar Just Murdered Every Rapper Ever On Big Sean’s “Control”

Posted by Lucas G. on 08/13/13 | Filed under Downloads, Kendrick Lamar, Big Sean, TDE
You know, if Big Sean really wants us to believe he is un-out-rap-able, he might want to stop putting Kendrick Lamar on songs. Earlier we talked about “100”, and while it was close Lamar Got him beat. On his new single, “Control”, Sean invites Kendrick back on the track and in true K Dot fashion; he proceeds to just absolutely dismantle the rap game. Seriously, there wont be any "Money Tree"-like discussion on this one. On the way home tonight, I checked twitter and literally every other tweet was about Kendrick. I know this industry is often reactionary and the latest verse from the flavor of the week is the GOAT, but as soon as I got home I popped the track on and…fuck it does live up to the hype. Oh, Jay Elec is on the song too.

Now technically this song won't make "Hall of Fame" (maybe as a bonus track?) because he and No I.D. couldn’t clear the sample in time, but still this has to do wonders for the buzz around Hall Of Fame. Sean kicks of the cut and is delivers a pretty damn good performance; I thought his vocals had a little more pop than usual. Then Kendrick comes in and just wipes everybody of the face of the earth. For two and half minutes, he rips the beat to shreds.

He even calls out pretty much every rapper in the game and while it might seem arrogant from another rapper, I don’t get that sense from Kendrick. He wants everyone at their best but also wants them to know he isn’t fucking around; since he can back it up, I kinda respect it. It’s not just his lyrics either, his flow and cadence give me goosebumps and his command of the mic is unrivaled. You really get the sense Kendrick is on a mission to be the best and every emcee in the game needs to be on alert.

To be honest, I haven’t really given Jay Elec’s part the listens it deserves - to catch what he says it often takes a few runs through - but on the surface his lyrics are as poetic as ever. Really though, this song is all about Kendrick. It is also the epitome of Big Sean at his best. I really enjoy his verse (and other verses) when they are paired with someone else, but alone he doesn’t do it for me. He should really just put Kendrick on every song...or never on any song ever, depending on how he feels about getting murdered on his own shit.
