Hip-hop heads are constantly bitching about how much wack shit is out today and waxing nostalgic for hip-hop’s “Golden Era” (approx. 1988 - 1993), an era in which no rapper ever sold out and every album was an instant classic. That, of course, is crap.

The truth is there’s been approximately equal measures of dope shit and wack shit, real shit and fake shit, since the very first days of hip-hop. Some of the wackest, most atrocious rap to ever enter the world came out during hip-hop’s “Golden Era”. In fact, a solid argument can be made that the “Golden Era” was also rap’s worst era.

So by all means, celebrate EPMD and De La Soul and Public Enemy and the plethora of other amazing music that dropped, but let’s be real about the Golden Era: it was a period during which a select minority of rappers made incredible music while struggling to compete against an onslaught of commercialized bullshit….just like 2012.
