Booty poppin in rap videos is so prominent these days that it seems inconceivable that there was a time when girls didn’t open shake their asses for the camera. Well there was, until Wreckx-n-Effect came along and dropped “Rumpshaker”, a video which was the Jackie Robinson of booty-centric rap vidoes. I’d now like to apologize to Jackie Robinson’ family. Sorry bout that.
The Refined Take:
1) “All I want to do is do a zoom zoom zoom with a boom boom.” I have no idea what that means, but I couldn’t agree more.
2) The girl “playing” the saxophone on the beach has to be one of the most egregious examples of “hot girl obviously fake playing a musical instrument” in music history, only topped by Robert Palmer’s “Addicted to Love” video, a feat of fake music playing that will never be topped. Ever.
3) To give you an idea of how seminal this video was to my development, the first time I heard Jay-Z’s then comeback single Show Me What You Got” all I could thing was, “Is that horn in the beginning a sample from ‘Rumpshaker’?”
4) I’d like to take a moment to shout out the neon daisy duke swim shorts the dude driving the boat is wearing. Bold move my friend, bold move.
5) What ever happened to Wreckx-n-Effects? Good question. The answer? Nothing. Due to internal differences MCA dropped them and they never put out another album after 1992. Like a comet, Wreckz-n-Effect were gone before we even truly got to know them.
