Aftermath-Era Stat Quo x Eminem Leaks: “Classic Shit” & “Atlanta on Fire” (Listen & Download)

As my grandfather used to say, there's no use wasting time thinking about what might have been - except, of course, when "what might have been" refers to the '03-'08 Aftermath version of Stat Quo's epically-delayed "Statlanta" LP, and previously-unreleased cuts featuring none other than Eminem have been unearthed. Then a little wondering is probably A-OK. These tracks are guaranteed to set "Atlanta on Fire," but do they deserve to be called "Classic Sh*t"?

The former track, "Atlanta on Fire," certainly excels on the dramatic irony tip; here, Stat recounts how his steadfast grind paid off when Eminem and Dre took notice - little did he know just how much more waiting was in his future. Still, it's hard to argue with the introduction Em gives Stat on verse two.

"Classic Sh*t" is a similarly hard-nosed, street-ready affair, with an extra-majestic twist courtesy of some organ/choir-laced production. A few factors, however, hold it back from classic status: for one, the collaborators don't seem to be on the same page subject-matter-wise - we all love to hear Em talk about his shady past, but it doesn't have a whole lot to do with Stat's braggadocio-packed bars. Also, at a hair over two minutes, it feels a little unfinished.

The new version of "Statlanta" drops June 22, (hopefully). Will it be worth the wait? I have my fingers crossed.
