Snoop Dogg Flips Jay-Z’s Empire With “Snoop State of Mind” (Video)

Posted by Nathan S. on 11/09/09 | Filed under Videos, Snoop Dogg

As Snoop prepares to unleash his latest album "Malice in Wonderland" he's been releasing a series of short videos (some featuring a semi-obese Paul Wall). In his latest installment, the Snoop flips Jay's "Empire State of Mind" for his own take on the Big Apple, the aptly-titled "Snoop State of Mind". And if you don't think it prominently involves mentions of the best places to buy weed in NY, well then you don't know the Doggfather.

The Refined Take:

1) I love how Snoop pretends in the intro like he's going to only give us a "sneak peek" and then decides to show the whole thing, as if they weren't going to show the whole video the entire time. The man's a slick promoter.
2) Fascinating to hear Snoop talk about the insanely overhyped east coast/west coast rap "war," an idea that's now completely dead. In the immortal words of Calvin Broadus, "You can't spell the west coast without "es' "....which may be technically true, doesn't really proves his point. I mean, you also can't spell "hamburgers," "horses" or "Texas" without "es." I'm just saying.
3) As for the song itself, it's actually pretty damn good, but I would have liked it better if he did a tribute to his own city. Come on, like you wouldn't have loved to seen a "Long Beach State of Mind" featuring several Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles references?
4) He just can't resist getting in a "the Lakers are way better than the Knicks" line. See, the man does have some hometown pride, even if he is rocking a Yankees jacket throughout the video. What, you couldn't have found an old-school Brooklyn Dodgers jacket? Now that would have been dope.
5) Snoop's new album "Malice N Wonderland" is set to drop December 8. Snoop is now the game's longest running premier rapper, and I don't see him stopping anytime soon.
