Weekend Edition: The best of the past week on RefinedHype, running from Saturday to Monday morning.
One of the most heated debates in RefinedHype history all all started with one simple Tweet from veteran emcee Mikkey Halsted:
It's a great question. So to recap our ground rules, we're talking about anyone in the entertainment industry who isn't a current or former professional athlete, right now, and in both one-on-one and a full five-on-five game. Got it?
The biggest problem with this debate so far has been a lack of evidence. We know Mikkey Halsted played Division I basketball in college, which puts him in rare air, but just how good is he? Similarly, J. Cole's probably the best known baller rocking a mic right now, the man call ball, but how well can he ball?
Thankfully we got a big dose of video evidence last courtesy of the NBA All-Star Celebrity Game, when Cole both threw down an alley-oop and swatted Common's weak lay-up:
Unfortunately, those videos don't really teach us anything we already didn't know. Cole's a legit athlete, and there's no way Common even belongs in this discussion. But Cole's dunk wasn't huge enough to convince me that he's an unstoppable athlete, and apparently swatting Common isn't particularly difficult. Plus, Cole was playing against the likes of b-ball luminaries Vinny (from "Jersey Shore") and Kevin Hart, who actually beat out Cole for the MVP.
Still, based on the evidence was have before us....I think I have no other choice but to declare Cole the best baller in the game right now. (Although I'd still like to argue that Master P has a solid shot at beating him at a one-on-one game). I'm perfectly willing to change my mind based on footage from Mikkey Halsted or anyone else, but for now.......
