As I predicted, Lil Wayne‘s impending jail time has given every new track released by the prodigious, allegedly gun-toting rapper an air of increased important, including his latest cut “Run This Town”, a sprawling, lyrically insane track that turns Jay’s smash hit into a hip-hop explosion.
Just so you know what you’re getting yourself into, here’s a portion of the lyrics: “Man I go to work on a beat, call it employed / bitch I kicks it, get a shin guard / Young Money run this, towns, countries / I still eat rappers / ummm…scrumptious.” Yeah that’s right, the man said “scrumptious.” Goddam he’s a genius.
On a related note, I don’t know if we’re truly appreciating the historical weight of Weezy’s impending jail time. Hopefully it will only be a few months and he won’t miss a beat, but not since Muhammad Ali have we seen someone at the top of their game get hauled off to jail (though Ali’s was a conscientious protest against the Vietnam War, while Wayne’s offense only involves a gun on a tour bus). Point is, I’m not saying hip-hop should be panicking, but maybe it should be at least slightly more concerned.
