Like Violence & Stupidity? You’ll Love “Jackass 3D” (Movie Review)

Johnny Knoxville and the gang are back again for the 3D stunt and prank hybrid, "Jackass 3D". If you’ve seen a Jackass movie, you already know what to expect: vomit, shit (human and animal), blood, and lots of penis. You’ll laugh, you’ll cringe, and some of you may vomit. For the third film, Johnny Knoxville and his merry band of idiots once more subject one another to a series of stunts and pranks that test the limit of the human body (and an audience’s gag reflex). Basically, it’s everything a Jackass fan could ask for.

Out of all the films I’ve ever to had review for this site, "Jackass 3D" has been the greatest challenge. Whereas the standard film has a checklist of things that should be critiqued such as acting, cinematography, and direction, Jackass features none of the above. This is filmmaking at its most natural – no script, no actors, and no plot; it’s pretty much YouTube on crack. With that in mind, I’m going to have to break away from standard review rhetoric and use this time to help you determine if this movie is right for you.

1. A man having his penis pulled by a remote control helicopter.
2. Projectile vomit.
3. Feces.
4. A midget getting glued in the 69 position with an overweight friend.
5. Two half-naked men playing tetherball with a bee hive.
6. A midget bar fight.

If you found yourself smiling (inside or outside) at any one of these concepts, Jackass is the movie for you. If you found yourself disgusted, you may want avoid this film at all costs (you may also want to slowly remove your tampon).

So what’s different about "Jackass 3D" from it’s two-dimensional predecessors? Well, for one, there’s the extra dimension. Personally, I prefer my films in their standard two-dimensional format and, still, I saw Jackass 3D in 3D. Why is that? It’s because of the crowd.

If there was ever a series that benefited from being seen with a large group of people, it’s "Jackass". The audience reaction to the film is almost as funny as the movie itself. If you’re going to see this movie, I recommend doing it in the largest theater possible. For that reason, you’re going to want to see it in 3D. Ninety-percent of the time, 3D has the larger crowd every time. (Points to anyone who gets the reference) Trust me.

The other significant difference from the prior Jackass films is the glorious slow motion sequences. I can honestly say that the slow-motion sequences in Jackass are the best I have ever seen. Events that would typically occur at nearly 100 mph (such as a man’s tooth being pulled out by a speeding Lamborghini and a string) are now presented in beautiful, high-definition, and crisp slow motion. The camera captures every detail and it’s wonderful.

Overall, the stunts in "Jackass 3D" are more consistently funny than those in the previous efforts but lack some of the quality. There’s nothing here that compares to Jackass Number Two’s “The Terrorist” or the original “Party Boy”, but there’s still quite a bit to enjoy. The Jackass guys may be running out of ideas (they even rehash some old tricks in the film’s opening half) but, until the well runs completely dry, I’m up for some more mayhem. Bring on "Jackass 4".
