Freddie Gibbs is the “Wrong One” to F**k With (Listen & Download)

There's been a lot of talk recently about the supposed "death of gangsta rap", and while that may be true for some meanings of the term, street-oriented, hard hitting hip-hop is alive and well, at least as long as rappers like Freddie Gibbs have anything to say about it. On Gibbs' new track "Wrong One" the Gary, Indiana native goes hard over a banging Buckwild beat, alternating between storytelling flows and aggressive taunts.

Two side notes. One, thanks to Sasha Frere Jones (the best music writer alive not named Nathan Slavik), Freddie Gibbs is now very improbably the favorite street rapper of a lot of rich, liberal white people after they read Jones' profile of Gibbs in a recent issue of the New Yorker, saying that he "rhymes the way he talks, quickly and cleanly, with little sentimentality or exaggeration." So if you're on a train in NY and you see a fifty-year old white woman singing along to Gibbs on her iPod, now you know why.

Also, I'm being told that this song explains how Gibbs acquired "the scar over by his eye." I wasn't aware he had a scar by his eye, but it's nice to know how it got there. Mystery solved.
