It sucks to reduce a rapper's career to a cautionary tale, but every time a rapper tells me they're considering signing to a major I point to Donnis. Three years ago, seemingly out of nowhere, Donnis was the hot rapper of the moment, leading to a signing with Donnis and widespread "next to blow" status.
And then...for whatever reason Atlantic Records apparently didn't feel like pushing him and he slowly but surely went from "hot rapper of the moment" to "oh yeah, that dude" every time he dropped new material (which was about a year ago. https://refinedhype.com/hyped/entry/donnis-blackberry-molasses/ For the record, I'm not saying that Donnis shouldn't have signed to Atlantic - only he can really make that call. But if you're looking for proof that signing to a major label is just as likely to cool you off as make you hot, you have to look in Donnis' direction.
So a rapper putting out new material shouldn't be a big deal, but when it's from the rarely heard from Donnis, it kind of is. Picking back up with his "Snack Pack" series, the ATL Brave unveils a package of goodies for your rap consumption, including a new video and two new tracks.
Stream and download of both new songs, "Gimme" and "Wanna Be Bad" are below the video for "Hoes". My verdict? Decent, but decent's not good enough to get the people to really start to care about you again.
