Because I F**King Want To….Clipse’s “Hell Hath No Fury” (Listen)

Sweet baby jesus knows why, maybe I've had some Pusha T on the brain since "Mercy", maybe it was the fact that the 10 kilos of hard white I ordered from Nicaragua finally got in last night, but I woke up with an urgent need to listen to Clipse's "Hell Hath No Fury" today. And so while I'm sure there's some new hot shit out there, fuck it. I'm going to write about "Hell Hath No Fury" because I want to.

As far as I'm concerned, "Hall Hath No Fury" was the apex of the so-called cocaine rap movement. Malice and Pusha T didn't just rhyme about moving cocaine, they rhymed about moving cocaine in an abstractly poetic and often religiously infused style. Case in point, "Keys Open Doors", which easily goes down as one of the album's standouts.

"Open the Frigidaire, 25 to life in here / So much white you might think Holy Christ is near."

Goddamn, now that's how you fucking do it. And that beat is exactly why it was so painful to watch their relationship with Pharell fall apart. Like Timbaland and Aaliyah, Erik B. and Rakim, No I.D. and Common, some producers were just born to make beats for certain artists. Pharell's heavily rhythmic, minimalist beats gave the album a more complex feel than 99% of the other coke rap out there, which primarily concentrated as being as hard and big as possible.

"I was 16, eyes full of hope/ baggin up grams at the Hyatt though/ news called it crack, I called it Diet Coke."

So while it hurts my hip-hop soul to know that Malice and Pusha will most likely never make another album together, and if they do it won't sound anything like "Hell Hath No Fury", I have to give praise. How many rappers can legitimately say that they've dropped a classic album? All praise due to the Clipse.

Goddamn I love this fucking album.
