I hate to think the future of the music business is a bunch of sick ass shock rappers with horrible rhymes and elementary beats. |

@SmokinAces: Would you rather it be Lil B & Waka Flocka Flame? These kids are changing music completely. Their stuff is really dark and sardonic, but it sounds good on the mike. Bastard (Tyler the Creator) was a fantastic album/mixtape because it combined so many different elements. They're not Lupe or Jay-Z but that's not what they were going for in the first place. Can't wait for Goblin in April. |

I agree with Smokin Aces. They're good for the sake of variety because hip-hop needs that. And they're movement is sick. But I don't want to see that future. One extreme doesn't mean the other. There's a such thing as the middle. Folk should just appreciate them for what they are and stop trying to always peg who the next big thing is. There's too many fucking rappers for one act to be the next big thing. |

@Originality, being against the grain an having energy and a good and, from what I can tell, very loyal rabid fanbase is cool. But it doesn't always equal good music. I'm not saying they have to be anyone else. But this whole thing about them being "the future" trips me out because do they have music that is going to translate like that. Like I see this being more niche than a standard for future artists. And not taking anything from their grind, but there are PLENTY of artists who are grinding just as hard if not harder with QUALITY MUSIC. These guys are getting more hype though because they are, for a lack of better terms, weirdos. They're vulgur, controversial, sickening, and have a crazy image. And people are attracted to that. But it has very little to do with the music. So, honestly, how is that really any different from what's going on right now? Style over substance and talent. To me their "movement" is in the vain of watching bum fights or 16 and Pregnant. It's all about shock value and something being intriguing or shocking rather than being quality material. |

When you put it like that you are definitely correct. The term "the future" maybe is overused in our media. Obviously our opinions differ on the quality of their music/movement. I can't convince you to like their music. And I will also say that not all of their members are quality. I constantly compare Odd Future to the style of Eminem's The Slim Shady LP. (One of my favorite albums) Take an album like Bastard and the themes represented on the album and they are very similar to the ones of TSSLP. (Sexual assault, humor, inner problems/thoughts, etc.)I am a strong believer in hip-hop branching out into other styles. I love cross-genre stuff and stuff like that. I'm always up for something new. Some critics (such as you) see Odd Future as an image that makes people want to listen while I believe it's the style of music that acquires the listeners. Either way, I'll agree with you. Odd Future is not the "future of hip-hop" but they are going to be crazy successful because of kids like me I guess. |

To jump in on the conversation above, yes, if Odd Future takes over music that would be bad. But if any style of music, from backpacker to auto-tune, takes over it's bad. Hip hop's at its strongest when as many styles as possible are represented. The real test is when they make the transition from super underground group to world famous group. Can they keep the punk energy that made them popular in the first place? |

Odd Future definitely aren't the future of Hip Hop. That's a pretty bold statement. Like Nathan said it's not a good look for a group, sound, etc. to be the future of a whole genre. It's very limiting. That's not to say that they're bad or anything like that. Personally, I like what I've heard so far. I'm kind of worried about their longevity though. |
