Asher Roth Gets Punny & Lyrical on “Turnip the Beet” (Listen)

Is there still any hip-hop head who still thinks of Asher Roth as the kid who did "I Love College"? Probably, but they obviously aren't citizens of RefinedHype Nation. Anyone who's paid attention to Asher's output over the last year knows that he's been re-inventing his image as a truly original lyricist - and he's been succeeding.

So while Asher's new "Turnip the Beet" is obviously just a loose cut with a punny name, I've already hit rewind on it three times. There just aren't many rappers out there who can so casually drop both a Kool Moe Dee, Kool Herc and "Eastbound & Down" reference with a flow this unique.

I know Asher is more rap nerd friendly and there are folks out there who still don't respect him. That's fine, no one's required to like anyone. But the rest of us (obviously including Rosenberg) will be playing "Turnip the Beet" for the rest of the day. We'll see what his Def Jam debut album ends up sounding like, but in the meantime, enjoy:
