Fashion is inspired by many things. World-renown designer “Coco” Chanel once said that “Fashion is in the air, born upon the wind…It is in the sky and on the road.” It is evident in today’s fashion that designers are highly-influenced by a number of things, among them music and dance.
Recently RefinedHype.com had the opportunity to ask We Are Heroes, the first female crew to win America’s Best Dance Crew, who they would consider fashion icons in the world of dance. Here is who they chose:
1. Fatima Robinson
Probably one of the more well-known choreographers of our time, Fatima Robinson’s choreography can be seen in music videos, movies, television, and more. In her younger years, Robinson was well on her way to pursuing a career in cosmetology but after winning a few dance competitions Robinson had a change of heart. She was then able to work her way up in the world of dance and only years later she was choreographing the video for Michael Jackson’s “Remember The Time.” Robinson’s list of clients have included Will Smith, Whitney Houston, Aaliyah, and more.
2. Laurie Ann Gibson
Although Laurie Ann Gibson may be most recognized for her work on Diddy’s Making The Band, she has quite the resume behind her. In the 90’s Gibson danced as a Fly Girl on the popular sketch comedy show In Living Color. She later went on to pursue a career as a choreographer and has since worked with artists that include Mary J. Blige, Diddy, Mario, and more. Recently, Gibson danced alongside Janet Jackson as Watch at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.
3. Nappy Tabs
Nappy Tabs is a clothing company created by choreographers and husband and wife duo Napoleon and Tabitha D’umo. We Are Heroes explained that Nappy Tabs, which specializes in clothing for dancers, has “put their style all over the dance community.” Together Napoleon and Tabitha have been responsible for the choreography for television shows So You Think You Can Dance and TLC’s Rock The Reception.
